About The Pension Department
For Those Still Having Retirement Anxiety

Forty Years of Watching the Numbers Up Close

The Pension Department was incorporated in 1985. Since then, we've done one job: administering 401(k) retirement plans as a third-party administrator (TPA) — the unglamorous, detail-heavy work of keeping plans compliant, funded correctly, and running the way they're supposed to.

Forty years is long enough to see the same story repeat itself, plan after plan, client after client.

What We've Actually Seen

Retirement planning, on paper, looks solvable. Contribute consistently, let compounding do its work, retire on schedule. That's the version in the brochure.

The version we see, up close, is different. We still watch people — some earning well over $100,000 a year, people who did everything the brochure told them to do — take a loan against their own 401(k) just to cover a gap that shouldn't have opened up. We still process hardship distributions from people who are, on paper, on track, and who are, in reality, running out of road before they run out of years left to work.

That's not a statistic we read somewhere. 4 in 10 U.S. adults now say they aren't confident they'll have enough to retire, and nearly 7 in 10 non-retirees worry about running out of money. We don't need the survey to tell us that. We see it in the plan documents.

We're Not Immune to It Either

Here's the part most firms in this industry don't say out loud: we feel it too. Thirty-five-plus years of doing this work doesn't inoculate you against retirement anxiety — if anything, it means you've seen enough client files to know exactly how thin the margin for error really is. Knowing the mechanics of the system doesn't make the number feel any less uncertain.

We think that honesty matters. A TPA that pretends the system is working smoothly for everyone isn't paying attention. We'd rather tell you what we actually see.

What We Do

  • Plan administration — keeping 401(k) plans compliant, accurately funded, and correctly documented year over year
  • Loan and distribution processing — including the harder conversations that come with hardship withdrawals and early distributions
  • Plan design and compliance guidance — helping employers build plans that hold up under real-world pressure, not just audit season
  • Direct client support — for both the employers sponsoring plans and the participants relying on them

Why We Started Making T-Shirts

At some point, we stopped just watching this quietly from inside the plan documents and decided to say it out loud — with a shirt, of all things.

Retirement Anxiety exists because a joke gets someone to stop scrolling; a good joke gets them to actually think about it for a second after. So we put the real anxiety on a t-shirt: a scratch ticket for a retirement plan, a milk carton for a missing nest egg, an eye chart that spells out PENSION NOT FOUND. Every design comes out of the same place forty years of doing this work does — people looking for a straight answer instead of a brochure.

It's also why 10% of every purchase goes to Feeding America. The overlap between retirement-insecure and food-insecure households is real, and often it's the same family managing both. So the shirt makes you laugh, and buying it does something honest on the way out.

Find yours. Whether it's a gift for a dad who jokes about retiring "someday," a coworker's send-off, or the shirt that says what your own 401(k) statement won't — [browse the full collection →]. Every shirt funds real meals through Team Pension Department. See the campaign →
